Hail and Storm Damage Roof Inspections in Farmington, Utah
Farmington sat under the September 18 tornado warning. We inspect the roof, photograph it, and let you decide what happens next.
What happened here
Farmington was under the September 18 tornado warning.
The September 18, 2026 storm crossed Davis and Morgan counties with hail and gusts over 60 mph. The tornado warning covered Layton, Kaysville, Farmington, Mountain Green and Morgan, and a tornado touchdown was confirmed near Francis Peak above Fruit Heights in an unpopulated area.
Farmington's east side climbs toward the canyon mouths, and that geography concentrates wind. Historic homes near the old town center have steep pitches and original detailing that reacts to hail differently than the newer construction on the bench. Both deserve a real inspection, with attention to chimney flashing, skylights, and the valleys that run off steep planes.
Local considerations
What matters on a Farmington roof.
Canyon winds along the east bench
Farmington sits near canyon mouths that funnel downslope wind onto the bench. Shingles with a broken seal on September 18 are the ones that leave during the next event.
Flashing and penetrations
Chimneys, skylights, and pipe boots take the brunt in a wind driven hail event. A leak that starts at a flashing joint looks like a roof failure months later.
Steep pitches and long valleys
Steeper Farmington roofs shed water fast, which means a compromised valley moves a lot of water to one spot. Those areas get photographed specifically in our report.
What to do next
A short checklist before you do anything else.
Do these four things before you commit to anyone.
Check from the ground. Watch for granule piles at downspouts, dented gutters and vent caps, and shingles that no longer lie flat.
Take photos. Cover all four elevations plus any dented metal, and note the storm date of September 18, 2026.
Call your carrier if the damage signs are real. Ask what your wind and hail deductible is and whether you are on replacement cost.
Do not sign at the door. An inspection report first, a contract only after you have read a full itemized scope.
Before you hire anyone
Three questions to ask before you hire anyone.
Is the shingle impact rated, and how does it get there?
UL 2218 Class 4 is the impact rating you want, but two shingles can carry it for very different reasons. Some reach it through polymer modified asphalt, where the mat itself flexes instead of cracking. Others reach it with a reinforcing mesh laminated to the back of a standard shingle. Atlas and Malarkey build their Class 4 lines the first way. Ask which one you are being quoted, in writing.
Which warranty am I actually getting?
Material, workmanship, and enhanced system warranties are three different things. The material warranty comes from the manufacturer, the workmanship warranty comes from the contractor, and the strongest enhanced system warranties require a certified installer and a complete system, ventilation included. Ask for the exact warranty name and what would void it.
Show me your ventilation calculation.
Intake at the eaves has to balance exhaust at the ridge. Mixed vent types short circuit each other, pulling air from the nearest opening instead of the soffits. Poor ventilation is what turns a cold snap into ice dams at this elevation, so a real contractor can show you the numbers before the tear off, not after.
