After a severe storm, hail and wind can damage homes across an entire area. If your home was in the storm's path, here's how to protect yourself.
Check from the ground first.
Look for dents in gutters, downspouts, AC units, garage doors and vehicles, and for missing shingles or siding. Dents there are a good sign the roof took hits too. Never climb on a wet or damaged roof.
Document and report.
Take photos and call your insurance company if you see damage. Most policies have deadlines for reporting, so don't wait.
Be careful with door-to-door contractors.
Don't sign anything at your door. An inspection doesn't require a signature. Some forms that look like permission to inspect are actually contracts. Ask to see their city solicitor badge. Door-to-door solicitors are required to carry one in most Utah cities.
Know your rights.
In Utah, it's illegal for a contractor to waive or pay your insurance deductible. Anyone who offers to is breaking the law. Under federal law, most contracts signed at your home can be canceled within three business days.
